What is CBM in Shipping?

CBM meaning in logistics — the cubic meter as the global standard for freight volume, pricing and container planning.

CBM stands for Cubic Meter (m³) — the volume of cargo measured in meters. It is the worldwide standard used by shipping lines, freight forwarders, NVOCCs and 3PLs to price ocean LCL, FCL, air freight and courier shipments. Whether you import from China, Vietnam, India or Turkey, every commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading you will ever sign uses CBM as the volume unit. Our free CBM calculator turns carton dimensions into accurate cubic meters in a single tap.

CBM full form and meaning

CBM is short for Cubic Meter, sometimes written as or CuM. One cubic meter is the volume of a perfect cube measuring 1 m × 1 m × 1 m — roughly the size of a standard washing machine. In international trade, CBM tells the carrier how much physical space your cargo will occupy in a container, an aircraft ULD or a courier van. The bigger the CBM, the higher the freight cost.

CBM formula

CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m) × Quantity. If your cartons are measured in cm, inches or feet, convert each side to meters first. Try it free in our cubic meter calculator, or read the dedicated guides for CBM in cm, CBM in inches and CBM in feet.

Quick CBM example

A carton measuring 60 × 40 × 30 cm has a volume of 0.072 m³. Ship 200 of those cartons and your total shipment is 14.4 CBM — a typical LCL booking. For air freight, the same shipment converts to about 2,400 kg of volumetric weight.

How shipping companies use CBM

  • Ocean LCL: priced per CBM or per 1,000 kg, whichever is higher (the W/M or weight-or-measure rule).
  • FCL: total CBM tells you whether to book a 20ft, 40ft, 40HC or 45HC container — see 20ft container dimensions and 40ft container dimensions.
  • Air freight: chargeable weight = max(gross kg, volumetric kg from CBM × 167).
  • Courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS): dimensional weight calculated from CBM with a divisor of 5000 or 6000.
  • Warehouse storage: 3PLs charge per CBM per month for pallet, bin and bulk storage.
  • Customs declarations: many countries require total CBM on the import declaration alongside gross weight.

CBM vs CFT — which one should you use?

1 CBM = 35.3147 CFT (cubic feet). Both measure volume, but CBM is metric and CFT is imperial. CBM dominates ocean and air international shipping; CFT is still common for US domestic LTL trucking, household-goods moves and self-storage. Converting between the two is built into our shipping unit converter.

How much cargo fits in a CBM?

  • 1 CBM ≈ 167 kg of air-freight volumetric weight
  • 1 CBM ≈ 35.31 CFT
  • 1 CBM ≈ 1,000 liters of liquid capacity
  • A 20ft container ≈ 28 usable CBM (see 20ft specs)
  • A 40HC container ≈ 68 usable CBM (see 40ft & 40HC specs)

Common CBM mistakes importers make

  • Measuring the inner carton instead of the outer shipping carton
  • Forgetting pallet height when palletising LCL cargo
  • Mixing units mid-calculation (cm with inches)
  • Rounding down — carriers always round up to the next 0.001 CBM
  • Ignoring chargeable weight on bulky-but-light shipments
